Do you have alcohol dependence?
If you have 3+ of the below criteria in the past 12 months, then you meet the diagnosis (ICD 10) for Alcohol Dependence
Difficulty controlling alcohol use
Strong desire to drink alcohol (craving)
Progressive neglect of alternate pleasures
Increased amounts of alcohol required to achieve the desired effects
Withdrawal symptoms on cessation or reduction of alcohol intake
Persistence of alcohol use
Untreated, alcohol dependence runs a progressive or relapsing course, causing great harm both to the drinker and their loved ones.
Alcohol is associated with up to 80% of suicides, death from fire, half of murders and 30% of fatal road traffic accidents.
What are the main steps in the treatment of alcohol dependence?
Comprehensive assessment and all relevant diagnosis are important for a successful treatment of alcohol. The main steps are:
Assessment: Alcohol use history, enquiry of previous withdrawal, complications of drinking, desire to change drinking, other substance use, desire to change, medical, psycho-social history and context
Clinical examination including cardiovascular, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and neurological
Laboratory tests used in the initial phase:Full Blood Count, Biochemical screen, additional tests if required
Formulation of your treatment program. For a successful treatmentprogram it is pertinent to reach the right diagnosis of alcohol dependence and any associated clinical conditions that is person specific
Treatment unique to meet your individual needs. Generally, the difficult part many people experience in the first few days is withdrawal symptoms, which in most instances can be clinically monitored and managed.
Most alcohol dependent person can be successfully treated in the community (your home).

Do I need a GP referral to receive Medicare subsidy?
We encourage you to get a referral from your GP, however, a GP referral is not essential for you to benefit from Medicare subsidy.
